The MathScience Innovation Center Presents
STEM in our World, the Power of Context
A STEM Conference for Grade 6-12 Educators
June 20-21, 2019 from 8:30am - 3:30pm
Meet and share with colleagues around the region as you learn more about how to make interdisciplinary connections between science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Explore programs, partnerships, and strategies to help students and educators understand potential STEM career pathways. Engage with experts in GeoScience fields, learn strategies that will help you implement the VDOE mathematics process goals and support a wide range of students.
Digging into GeoScience - Explore the Geosciences - the study of the Earth - its oceans, atmosphere, rivers and lakes, ice sheets and glaciers, soils, as well as its surface, interior, and core. Learn many aspects of how living things, including humans, interact with the Earth. Sessions in this strand will also engage in the study of the geology of Virginia.
Innovations in STEM Learning - Investigate programs, partnerships, and strategies to help students and educators understand the potential futuristic applications of math, science, engineering and technology. Themes include connections between K-12 education, higher education, and workforce development, as well as how to encourage students to pursue STEM careers.
Creating Inclusive Classrooms - Sessions in this strand will focus on giving teachers strategies to support a wide range of students. Sessions may address inclusion, multilingual education, exceptional education and how to use differentiation and assets-based pedagogy to support all students. Some sessions will incorporate grade or topic specific classroom activities.
Authentic Learning - Empowering students through exploration and authentic experiences can be transformative for teaching and learning. Presentations in this strand highlight effective implementation of experiential, integrated learning, which may include design thinking, project-based learning, problem-based learning, and engineering design. Applications to the new science standards will also be included.
Making the Math Curriculum Come Alive - Topics in this strand include: emphasizing the Process Standards, incorporating real-life applications while targeting core SOL concepts, and creative problem-solving.
Using Technology as a Teaching Tool - Presentations in this strand will utilize technology as a medium for instruction. Opportunities to explore how computational thinking and game-based coding can create a dynamic learning experience in the classroom will be incorporated.
Geology Field Trips!
MSiC will be hosting our ever popular geology field trip as a double session offering during the conference.
